Gallery on 103

Laurinda Smit, besides her day job producing a monthly local news publication with two associates, is also a mandala artist. Using a pointillist painting technique among other styles, she paints vibrant, detailed mandalas which she sells at her studio, Gallery on 103.

Laurinda also fully embodies the Recycle Ethos by transforming anything interesting she can find, discarded along the wayside, into an artwork. Her sculptures consist of papier mâché, wire, rusted metal, or stone. These are installed in all sorts of secret unexpected places in a garden that was, in Laurinda’s words” constructed out of a void, with no plan, using waste material and discarded plants brought to life through nurturing.” The 103 bit of the name “Gallery on 103” refers to the number of steps winding through the property which hides even a mini labyrinth, the curves lined with upended green and brown glass bottles.

Rugby Gesels

Drama

Just One Chapter

Through the human library we experience humanity in all its forms. People from all walks of life enter your world and you open yourself up to new and profound experiences where prejudice and bias don’t exist…just connection.

Often when we meet those who live on the periphery, we find commonality we did not know existed and walls are broken down.

The true to life concept of a Human Library was initiated in Denmark at the turn of the 21st century to break down barriers between people and create true symbiosis, even if it was just for a few moments. In the play actors Reneé van Rensburg and Carel Mouton, explore some real-life stories and some with characters that exist in our dreams or on pages but share our pain, anguish, joy, laughter and ultimately, the very things that make us human.

Frequency, vibration, and sound influence the nervous system and every cell in the body. Tibetan Singing Bowl Therapy harnesses these elements to penetrate deeply, reaching areas beyond physical touch, facilitating profound healing.

Tibetan singing bowls, utilized for centuries, emit frequencies, sounds, and vibrations believed to impact the mind, body, and spirit. Understanding their interconnectedness is crucial for appreciating their significance.

Garden and Labyrinth: 103 Steps

Laurinda Smit brings immense value to visitors of her enchanting garden at 103 Steps. A pointillism artist and sculptress, Laurinda began working on her garden to create a healing space for herself. “Not everyone can walk the Camino when they need to heal, nurture themselves, or find inner peace. I started the garden to bring that nurturing into my own life on a daily basis.”

The name “103 Steps” comes from the 103 steps that lead visitors through a magical, calming landscape filled with whimsically mystical sculptures and installations. “I use everything from crystals to found objects like stones and driftwood. I rarely have a pre-planned idea of what I’ll do with any object. Instead, I let myself be led and inspired by the object itself, as well as the plants in the garden,” she says.

The garden also features a labyrinth and a small amphitheater where Laurinda hosts intimate events, but it truly shines on the first Wednesday of each month. “I light a few candles near the entrance, and visitors are welcome to take a candle and walk through the garden,” she said. “To find that nurturing for themselves or to simply experience the essence of life in a sacred space.”

Attracting Birds to your Garden – Talk

Presented by Christiaan Viljoen, Curator and General Manager for the Garden Route Botanical Garden Trust, a Non-Profit Organisation located in George.

There are at least six different species of sunbird as well as the iconic Cape Sugarbird in the Garden Route. The sunbirds, in particularly the males, are usually superbly colourful with iridescent blue, green, red and purple feathers. Attract some of these gorgeous birds to your garden by planting the nectar-providing flowers that supply them with the energy they need for survival. This list of indigenous plants (bulbs, succulents, shrubs and trees) will provide nectar-rich flowers to attract sunbirds and sugarbirds to your garden.

Bring a chair/blanket to sit on for talks.

Over the last nine years the Carpe Musicam! Orchestra & Choir have brought joy to thousands of Garden Route music lovers. The latest addition to their “stable” of high-quality musical performance groups – the “Pops Band” – has performed at the Garden Route Mall and Outeniqua family Market, where it brought the Carpe Musicam! touch to a whole new family of potential fans.
